Sculpting Young Minds: Inspiring the Next Generation of Artists

At the UMLAUF, nurturing creativity in young people is at the heart of everything we do. Through our Shaping Space program, we bring after-school art education to Austin’s Title 1 schools, giving students the opportunity to explore sculpture, art, and nature. Our dedicated teaching artists guide these young minds as they develop their artistic skills and self-confidence. As one of our teaching assistants shared, “I’ve seen kids thrive creatively, building confidence as they experiment and grow.”

Thanks to your support, Shaping Space reached over 100 students last year, and we’re thrilled to expand its reach. With your help, we can double our impact, bringing arts education to 200 students across ten schools next year. Your gift directly supports programs like Shaping Space, Family Day, and Strawfest, empowering the next generation of creators and thinkers.

Sculpting Innovation: Pushing the Boundaries of Art

At the UMLAUF, we’re always looking to push the boundaries of what art can be. This year, we’ve introduced innovative exhibitions like Suspended, showcasing dramatic suspended sculptures, and Floating Forest and Design Shine, which encouraged creative experimentation from emerging artists. As Executive Director, Katie Robinson-Edwards, shared, “The UMLAUF is a rare place in Austin where we mentor emerging artists, giving them guidance and experience (like our Apropos exhibition in 2023).”

With your support, we can continue to offer ambitious projects that push artistic boundaries and create meaningful experiences for our community. Upcoming exhibitions like Beyond the Bombshell: Farrah Fawcett will allow us to share treasured objects from the Blanton Collection. Donations also support our Bronze Care Corps, which conserves and cares for Austin’s public and private bronze sculptures. Your contributions, no matter the amount, make an impact—whether it’s supporting artist stipends, exhibition materials, or conservation efforts. Preserving the Legacy, Sculpting the Future

We are dedicated to honoring the past while shaping the future. This year, we completed our Historic Preservation, Expansion, and Unification (HPEU) Plan, a transformative vision that will protect Charles & Angeline Umlauf’s historic home and studio while unifying and enhancing the garden experience. Our efforts include projects like our urban forestry initiative, where we cared for over 100 trees, and revitalized our ponds with native species to increase sustainability and biodiversity.

Your gift supports the preservation of today’s treasures—Umlauf’s sculptures and his home—while funding new spaces for future exhibits and educational opportunities. Together, we can create a sustainable future where art and nature thrive in harmony, enriching Austin’s cultural landscape for generations to come.

Sculpting the Future of Community

The UMLAUF is more than just a museum; it’s a place for connection, collaboration, and community. This year, we welcomed over 35,000 visitors, worked with over 100 youth volunteers, and strengthened our relationship with the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired through their Summer Work Experience program.

With your support, we can expand these efforts and enhance accessibility. Contributions will help fund tools like our upcoming audio guide, tactile labels for sculptures, and multilingual resources to reach a wider community. Your gift also helps fund initiatives like sensory-friendly certifications and free activity sheets for young learners.
