Scale model for sculpture placed at entrance to Love Field Airport, Dallas. Umlauf’s first place entry established his national reputation. The full-sized piece is 17 feet high and is mounted on a 24 foot granite plinth centered in a fountain and surrounded by 18 birds (Love Field Birds as seen in the parking lot). This was Umlauf’s first piece to be cast at Pietrasanata, Italy, where the “lost wax process” has been practiced for centuries. From 1960 on, Umlauf worked at Pietrasanta yearly to make full-sized castings of scale models he developed and readied in Austin.
